The Who made classics throughout their career and I can't separate "Live at Leeds,'" Quadrophenia" and "Who's Next," but the latter's album cover has to be commemorated on paper. The band were heading for a gig with photographer Ethan A. Russell when they went off road (probably for that piss), and found the Kubrick-like monolith. Moon and Entwhistle instigated the shoot apparently as it reminded them of "2001:A Space Odyssey"...I believe it's still there, on a coal slag in Easington, County Durham.
I still feel the shivers as I did on first hearing in the late summer of 1971, as Daltry screams near the end of "Won't Get Fooled Again" to conclude this masterpiece.
A British genius. Pete Townshend.
