I first became aware of Ray in my wee village chipper in 1961. "Hit the Road Jack" was number 1 and a big favourite with the local farmers on that beautiful Wurlitzer. Later I was mesmerised by "In the Heat of the Night." The soundtrack was the most stunning marriage of screenplay and music I had ever seen, and I still find it incredible. As the years rolled by Ray's versatility and soul kept on giving, but it's still "Jack" that I thank for the introduction.
